ABOUT US

Creative City KC, Inc. is the founding organization that established and manages Kansas City Missouri USA’s membership in the UNESCO Creative CIties Network. Creative City KC is an advocate for Kansas City’s music economy and stewards of the City’s designation as the first and only UNESCO City of Music in the United States.

Creative City KC, Inc. was established in 2018 to manage the City of Kansas City Missouri’s membership in the UNESCO Creative Cities Network. The organization serves as a connector between the City and UNESCO. We work to build support for UNESCO and the Creative Cities Network within the Kansas City area and in Missouri.

ABOUT UNESCO

UNESCO is the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization – is a specialized agency of the United Nations.

UNESCO’s mission is to build peace in the hearts and minds of people around the world through a wide variety of activities and programs. Education, science and culture are critical to the future of Kansas City, Missouri and its citizens. These fields of research, knowledge and practice are vitally important to our local and regional economy.

UNESCO and World Heritage

UNESCO is most widely known for its work to advance World Heritage. The UNESCO World Heritage program was founded in 1972.UNESCO’s World Heritage List recognizes natural and cultural sites of outs tanding universal value around the world.

Kansas City is not a World Heritage site. The UNESCO Creative Cities Network is a different program. That said – one of Creative City KC’s core values is the protection and preservation of the city’s musical culture – as tangible, intangible and digital heritage.

UNESCO Creative Cities Network (UCCN)

The UNESCO Creative Cities Network was established in 2004. The mission of the UCCN is to advance sustainable urban development through creativity and culture.

SUSTAINABLE
DEVELOPEMENT

The Network promotes cooperation and collaboration between Mayors and Cities around the world with a focus on the role of culture as a driver of sustainable development. Member cities in the UCCN commit to advance the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SGDs) of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
