The American Music Apprenticeship Program (AMAP) is a signature program currently being developed by Creative City KC to strengthen the pathways into music and the performing arts as a career. For years, musicians were not recognized as a profession and there was no option within the Department of Labor for an apprenticeship program as a pathway into professional music performance careers. The American Music Apprenticeship Program is central to Creative City KC’s Global Music Strategy as part of our commitment to increase access to education across the life cycle in Kansas City.
In particular – our Global Music Strategy Goal #2 seeks to leverage funding from the Department of Labor and other sources to create workforce development and career education opportunities through the American Music Apprenticeship Program (AMAP). This program was established by Anita Dixon-Brown, who procured through the Department of Labor a RAPIDS code signifying the musician as a unique occupation. Creative City KC is working with representatives from the labor unions to reintroduce professional training in music performance for high school and college students.
