About Jazz Day Relay

For our third year in a row – Kansas City is helping to organize the Jazz Day Relay. Begun in 2023 with Kansas City musicians Angela Ward, Amber Underwood and Aryana Nemati playing in Frutillar, Chile at the Teatro del Lago – the Jazz Day Relay features one song played around the world in a “relay race” and video montage.

The Jazz Day Relay connects UCCN member cities through a shared composition aimed at highlighting one of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

For 2025, the featured composition has been provided by composer and educator Mark Simeon Ferguson from Adelaide, Australia (UNESCO CIty of Music since 2015).  Cities of Music are currently working on their videos and performances and the final version will be premiered on Apr 30, 2025 – International Jazz Day.

In 2024, the Jazz Day Relay featured a traditional song from South Korean city of Daegu. Performed by the Park Siyeon Trio – Bird, Bird Bluebird focused on music for Climate Action (SDG13).

In 2023, the Jazz Day Relay featured a composition by Kansas City musician Jaylen Ward – called Afro Red.
